Background of the Study

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic disease among older adults, and its management in this population presents unique challenges. Elderly patients often have comorbid conditions, cognitive impairments, and other age-related issues that complicate diabetes management. Proper care requires a multidisciplinary approach, including regular blood sugar monitoring, medication management, lifestyle adjustments, and the prevention of complications like neuropathy, retinopathy, and cardiovascular disease (Blount et al., 2024).

In Kano State, a high prevalence of diabetes among older adults has been reported, yet the knowledge and skills of healthcare providers, particularly geriatric nurses, in managing diabetes may be insufficient. Geriatric nurses play a critical role in managing chronic conditions, providing education, and ensuring compliance with treatment plans. However, their level of knowledge on the latest diabetes management strategies may vary, impacting the quality of care provided to elderly patients. This study aims to assess the knowledge of geriatric nurses in Kano State regarding diabetes management for older adults, identifying gaps in knowledge and training needs.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the increasing prevalence of diabetes among older adults in Kano State, many healthcare providers, including geriatric nurses, may not have adequate knowledge of the latest diabetes management practices. This knowledge gap could contribute to poor patient outcomes, including increased rates of complications and hospitalizations. This study will evaluate the level of knowledge among geriatric nurses in managing diabetes in older adults and highlight areas for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of knowledge of geriatric nurses regarding diabetes management among older adults in Kano State.
  2. To identify the factors influencing geriatric nurses’ knowledge of diabetes management in Kano State.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving the knowledge and training of geriatric nurses in diabetes care for older adults.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of knowledge of geriatric nurses regarding diabetes management in older adults in Kano State?
  2. What factors influence the level of knowledge of geriatric nurses in managing diabetes in older adults in Kano State?
  3. How can the knowledge and skills of geriatric nurses in diabetes management be improved?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Geriatric nurses in Kano State have inadequate knowledge of current diabetes management practices for older adults.
  2. The lack of ongoing training and limited access to resources negatively affects the knowledge of geriatric nurses in managing diabetes in older adults.
  3. Improving education and training for geriatric nurses will enhance diabetes management outcomes for older adults.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on geriatric nurses in hospitals and clinics in Kano State. Data will be collected through surveys and interviews with nurses, as well as from patient records where applicable. Limitations include possible self-reporting bias and limited access to certain healthcare settings.

Definitions of Terms
